Images of Greatness

My next program is swiftly arriving:  Images of Greatness!  In the program, Grade 6 and 7 students will have the opportunity to study an "eminent" person of their choice ( I already have one student wanting to study the life of Steve Jobs).  As a group, we will figure out what eminence is, and then students will choose their person, and put together a project about this individual.  Students will look at early life, education, critical moments or turning points, and how this person contributed to society.  Students are given the opportunity to "be in role" of this person on the final day, and furthermore, present their learning to the group.

Students are given the opportunity to share their learning in a variety of formats, such a power point presentations, poster board presentations, oral reports - you name it.  The students will have to create  "products of learning" such as business cards, and other items that represent the individual they are studying.

This program is a great format for students who are passionate about learning. As well, there is time built into the program for reflection:  how do eminent people deal with adversity and conflict? what issues did they have to overcome?  What have you learned from studying the life of this person?

The program if open to students in grades 6 and 7 from the Vancouver School Board Elementary Schools.  Teachers and School Contacts, I will be accepting applications this week and will let you know by the middle of this week who has been accepted into the program.

Program dates:  October 18, 19, 25, 26/ 2011

You will find the application forms in the Gifted Handbook that was sent out to schools last week, or was given to you in person at the Gifted Contact Meeting last week.

Since there is a tight turn around time, you can fax the forms to me at Brock Elementary.

I hope that all students, teachers, and parents have a wonderful Thanksgiving....
