Finally linked to the VSB

I have had this blog for a few years now, my intent being:

1.  To showcase the type of work and projects we do in the Challenge Centre
2.  To provide a  resource for parents and teachers to see what occurs in the Challenge Centre, and for them to learn more about gifted education; initially I wanted to have units and resources and links on line.
3.  To promote the work we do in a time when there are many cutbacks in education

I began this endeavour in a blog format, wanting to create a website within the Vancouver School Board for gifted education.  However, working only 3 days per week, I have found it difficult to develop a web site, and to get it approved by the Vancouver School Board.  So, for the meantime, I have linked this blog to the Vancouver School Board website.  However, I am not linked to the gifted page on the website, and this is something I am working towards.  Keep posted over the course of this year, as I will move forward with this blog.

Technology and Teachers

Well, I would love to say that I am a technie, but sadly, I am not.  I am beginning to learn more about computers, but my husband laughs at me, as do my own sons.  It is challenging being a teacher and learning about computers.  Basically, I am on my feet all day, interacting with kids, and sadly, I don't have the time to muck around with computers.....so, for the last 18 years, I have learned sporadically.

Well, the Challenge Centre is getting a smart board, and we have gone wireless!!!  I am very excited as students can bring their own laptops, and do their research on line.  As well, I will have a more interactive way to teach; and I am learning more all the time.

I would really like to get the challenge centre referrals and invitations on line so that we reduce the use of paper and can speed up the process.  We are working on this.

Mind Your Brain

I am furiously planning the next Challenge Centre entitled,
Mind Your Brain.  Here, we will learn about the brain, psychology, and learning.  It will be very interesting for me as the teacher to work with these concepts with the students.

Hopefully students will return to their schools with new ideas about thinking and learning.  I will post more as the program unfolds.

Philosophy for Kids

The longer I am a teacher, the more important I believe it is for students to ask questions and think about the world around them.  Time to contemplate and think and figure out these big life questions is what the students did for four days in the Philosophy Challenge Centre.

What great thinkers did I see....here is a sample of one of the projects created:  it is a learning centre about philosophy.
Over the four days, students were given mini projects to complete.  We worked with ideas such as:  understanding valid arguments, learning about  Plato and his ideas, understanding the nature of reality and truth; learning how to dialogue, and participating in mini research projects on various philosophers.
